Baalbek

Baalbek lies in Lebanon’s broad Bekaa Valley and is dominated by a monumental Roman temple complex built on earlier sacred foundations. Massive columns, courtyards and stone platforms survive at a scale rarely matched elsewhere in the ancient Mediterranean. The modern city spreads around the ruins, with markets, homes and religious buildings forming a busy local centre.

The archaeological site is the clear focus, but its impact comes partly from the surrounding mountain-lined valley and the contrast with ordinary urban life. Carved details and enormous stone blocks reward close inspection after the first dramatic view. Current travel conditions can affect access, so plans should be checked carefully rather than assumed.
