Providencia

Providencia is a small island in the western Caribbean, with a mountainous interior, coral reefs and settlements spread around a single coastal road. Local culture and language reflect long Afro Caribbean and maritime traditions. Settlement remains limited to small villages around the coast, leaving the steep interior largely forested and lightly developed. Hurricane rebuilding has altered homes and infrastructure around several coastal communities.

Snorkelling, diving and walking provide the main experiences, while limited development preserves a strong sense of community. Recovery from recent storm damage remains visible across parts of the island. The surrounding reef contains channels, walls and shallow lagoons that support diving without the scale of mass tourism found on larger islands.
