OVERVIEW
Prague is a large city built along the Vltava River, with medieval quarters, hilltop fortifications and nineteenth century districts forming a remarkably coherent centre. Later residential areas extend widely beyond the famous historic core. Distinct quarters grew around castles, markets and river crossings, leaving different street patterns and architectural layers within a walkable central area.
Walking reveals dense layers of architecture, but major routes become heavily crowded. Early mornings, local neighbourhoods and riverside parks provide a calmer view of a city whose cultural life extends well beyond its monuments. Theatre, music and contemporary art remain important parts of local life, especially in districts beyond the busiest old town routes.
