OVERVIEW
Porto Santo is a low, dry Atlantic island with a long sandy beach, compact settlements and bare hills rising behind the coast. Development is concentrated around the main town and resort shoreline. The island is drier and less rugged than its neighbour, with sparse vegetation and settlement concentrated on the southern coastal plain. A small airport and ferry port connect the otherwise isolated community.
Swimming, walking and cycling create a gentle pace, while inland viewpoints reveal the island’s volcanic form. The quieter atmosphere contrasts strongly with the greener and more mountainous neighbouring island. A network of inland paths reaches wind shaped peaks and geological formations that provide a different perspective from the long main beach.
