OVERVIEW
Madeira is a mountainous Atlantic island with deep valleys, forested ridges and towns built on steep coastal slopes. Irrigation channels cross the interior and now form an extensive walking network. The destination is physically divided between island interior and mountain terrain, with roads and settlements linking the two. Forest occupies a different part of the destination from gardens, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Hiking, gardens and scenic roads provide the strongest experiences, while local food and village life add cultural depth. Weather varies sharply with elevation and exposure, so flexible plans are useful when moving between coast, forest and high ridges. Coastal towns and mountain villages also provide strong contrasts within short driving distances.
