OVERVIEW
Fuerteventura is a low, arid Canary Island with broad beaches, rolling volcanic hills and long stretches of sparsely settled coast. Resort towns are concentrated around several bays, while inland villages and goat farms preserve a quieter rural character. The landscape feels more open and desert like than on greener neighbouring islands.
Corralejo’s dunes, the wild road to Cofete and the old inland town of Betancuria show very different sides of the island. Constant wind supports surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, while the open volcanic plains reward long drives. Resort areas have good services, but the most memorable landscapes often lie along rougher roads.

THINGS TO DO
Cycle Fuerteventura’s principal route
Choose a cycling route around Fuerteventura’s principal cycling route that matches your fitness and the available time. Check gradients, surfaces and traffic rather than judging the ride by distance alone.
Cycling
2 hours to full day
Surf at Fuerteventura’s best-known surf break only in conditions suited to your ability. Breaks, currents and access vary by season, and unfamiliar locations are best approached with local advice.
Find Fuerteventura’s surf beaches
Spend time at Fuerteventura’s surf beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Kitesurf in Fuerteventura
Kitesurf at Fuerteventura’s main kitesurfing area only in wind and water conditions suited to your ability. Local instruction is important where launch areas, currents or seasonal winds are unfamiliar.
