Porto is a large northern city rising from both banks of the Douro River, with a dense historic centre, monumental bridges and residential districts climbing steep hills. Maritime commerce and wine shipping shaped much of its architecture and wealth. Granite buildings and narrow streets climb sharply from the river, while later commercial avenues occupy the higher ground behind the old centre.

Walking reveals dramatic changes in level and river views, while markets, food and neighbourhood streets provide depth beyond the waterfront. Cellar visits across the river add context without defining the whole city.
