OVERVIEW
Coimbra rises from the Mondego River towards one of Europe’s oldest universities. The upper town contains grand academic buildings, libraries and courtyards, while narrow streets descend through former religious and commercial quarters. Across the river, monasteries and gardens provide a wider view of the city’s long institutional history.
Student traditions remain visible through black academic dress, ceremonial events and a distinctive local style of fado music. The university crowns the hill, while lower streets descend towards the river through shops and cafés. Climbs are steep, but viewpoints and shaded lanes break the ascent. The city rewards an overnight stay once day groups have left.
