OVERVIEW
Braga is one of Portugal’s oldest cities and a major centre of Catholic life. Its compact core contains churches, arcaded streets and civic buildings from several periods, while a monumental sanctuary rises on a wooded hillside outside the centre. A large student population and modern suburbs extend the city beyond its historic image.
Religious architecture is central, especially during major festivals, but cafés, shops and evening social life keep the centre from feeling purely ceremonial. The sanctuary’s grand stairway and views provide a strong contrast with the flat central streets. Nearby villages and wine country add rural context without diminishing the city’s own cultural weight.
