OVERVIEW
Port Sudan is a large city on the Red Sea, with docks, commercial streets and residential areas extending across an arid coastal plain. Maritime trade and transport have made it one of the country’s most important urban centres. Coral reefs begin close to the coast, creating a marine environment sharply different from the dry mountains and plains inland.
Reef diving and sea views provide unusual contrast with the dry inland landscape. Current conflict and security conditions make travel highly uncertain, despite the city’s maritime and cultural significance. The port also brings communities from across the Red Sea region together through shipping, fishing and long established trading connections. Older coral buildings survive in parts of the commercial centre.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Virgin Mary Church of Port Sudan
Use Virgin Mary Church of Port Sudan to understand a specific part of Port Sudan’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Snorkel around Port Sudan’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Dive at Port Sudan’s principal sites
Dive around Port Sudan’s principal dive sites with an operator suited to your certification and experience. Visibility, currents and access change with conditions, and particular sightings are never guaranteed.
