OVERVIEW
Mecca is a large city in western Saudi Arabia, centred on the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba, the most sacred site in Islam. Hotels, transport systems and dense urban development extend around the pilgrimage core. Port occupies a different part of the destination from mosques, giving the wider area a clear physical structure. Beyond the central area, outer districts and mosques continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Access is restricted to Muslims, and religious observance shapes every aspect of the visit. Crowds can be immense during pilgrimage periods, requiring careful preparation and respect for sacred protocols. Central streets is encountered differently from port, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Routes through port lead naturally towards central streets, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Kaaba
Use Kaaba to understand a specific part of Mecca’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Look closely at Al Sakkaf Palace for a concrete introduction to Mecca’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Visit Holy Quran Museum with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
