OVERVIEW
Massawa is a coastal town in Eritrea, built across islands and causeways around a natural harbour. Ottoman and Italian architecture survives among markets, residential streets and damaged historic buildings. Islands and harbour belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. The transition between islands and markets is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre, with harbour providing an additional point of connection.
The old port is the main focus, with sea views and weathered façades creating a distinctive atmosphere. Current travel restrictions and regional conditions require careful checking before any visit. The relationship between coast and markets becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area. Exploring beyond markets reveals island interior, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
