OVERVIEW

The Dahlak Archipelago contains more than a hundred low islands and reefs off the Eritrean coast. Most are uninhabited, with dry scrub, shallow lagoons and traditional fishing settlements scattered across the group. Coral reefs support turtles, dolphins and abundant fish, while historic ruins reflect centuries of maritime trade.

Access is limited and depends on permits, boats and local arrangements. Diving and snorkelling can be excellent, but infrastructure is minimal and reliable operators are essential. Heat, remoteness and political restrictions make travel complex, preserving a sense of isolation rarely found in more developed marine destinations.
