Port-au-Prince is a vast capital built around a broad bay and steep surrounding hills, with government districts, dense neighbourhoods and commercial streets spread across difficult terrain. Earthquakes, political instability and rapid growth have transformed much of the urban fabric. Informal development climbs the slopes above the bay, while damaged civic areas and historic neighbourhoods occupy the lower city.

Art, music and markets remain central to the city’s cultural identity. Current security conditions are extremely serious, and leisure travel cannot be treated as routine. Galleries, metalwork and painted public transport reflect a powerful visual culture that continues despite severe instability and displacement. Historic gingerbread houses survive in limited pockets among the damaged urban fabric.
