OVERVIEW
Cap-Haïtien is a coastal city with a compact historic centre of colourful façades, balconies and a formal street grid. It served as an important colonial port and later became closely connected with the country’s struggle for independence. Mountains rise directly behind the urban area, while beaches and fishing settlements extend along the nearby coast.
The central streets are lively with markets, schools and informal commerce, though many historic buildings show signs of age and limited maintenance. Excursions to a vast hilltop fortress and former royal palace provide the strongest historical context. Road conditions and services can be inconsistent, but the combination of urban heritage and dramatic inland monuments is unique.

THINGS TO DO
Find Cap-Haïtien’s coastline
Spend time at Cap-Haïtien’s coastline rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Admire Cap-Haïtien’s colonial architecture
Look closely at Cap-Haïtien’s colonial architecture for a concrete introduction to Cap-Haïtien’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Our Lady of the Assumption
Use Our Lady of the Assumption to understand a specific part of Cap-Haïtien’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
