OVERVIEW
Puerto Plata is a large city on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, with a historic centre, working port and resort districts extending along nearby beaches. A steep green mountain forms a dramatic backdrop, while residential neighbourhoods and commercial streets spread inland from the waterfront. Victorian houses and a central square preserve traces of the city’s nineteenth century commercial prosperity.
Architecture, food and cable car views provide more urban depth than the resort image suggests. Coastal roads and smaller communities offer quieter alternatives beyond the main hotel zones. Beyond the historic core, cable car access to the mountain and nearby coastal communities diversify a stay otherwise dominated by beaches. Rum production and amber craft remain part of the regional economy.
