OVERVIEW
Barahona is a small city and surrounding coastal area in the south-west of the Dominican Republic. The shoreline alternates between pebble beaches, steep green hills and clear river mouths, while inland roads climb into dry mountains and coffee-growing valleys. The city provides basic services, but most natural attractions lie along the coast or in the wider province.
Travel is more independent than in the country’s large resort zones, with limited public transport and relatively few polished hotels. Saltwater lagoons, wildlife areas and quiet beaches offer strong variety, while local towns remain oriented towards fishing and agriculture. Distances and road conditions require planning, but the region’s lack of mass development is part of its appeal.
