OVERVIEW
Plovdiv is a large city in southern Bulgaria, with Roman remains, an Ottoman era old town and modern commercial districts spread across several hills. Archaeological sites appear directly within residential and pedestrian streets. The old town occupies several slopes, while the main pedestrian centre crosses a lower plain containing excavated Roman streets and public buildings.
Walking reveals constant shifts between ancient structures, nineteenth century houses and contemporary cultural spaces. Food, galleries and neighbourhood cafés keep the centre active beyond its formal monuments. Former tobacco warehouses and arts districts show how industrial architecture has become part of the city’s contemporary cultural life. The city’s contemporary arts scene is strongest in former commercial and industrial quarters.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis
Look closely at Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis for a concrete introduction to Plovdiv’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Explore Plovdiv’s archaeological sites
Explore Plovdiv’s archaeological sites to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Plovdiv. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace local history at Plovdiv Regional
Use Plovdiv Regional to understand a specific part of Plovdiv’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
