OVERVIEW
Plovdiv is a large city in southern Bulgaria, with Roman remains, an Ottoman era old town and modern commercial districts spread across several hills. Archaeological sites appear directly within residential and pedestrian streets. The old town occupies several slopes, while the main pedestrian centre crosses a lower plain containing excavated Roman streets and public buildings.
Walking reveals constant shifts between ancient structures, nineteenth century houses and contemporary cultural spaces. Food, galleries and neighbourhood cafés keep the centre active beyond its formal monuments. Former tobacco warehouses and arts districts show how industrial architecture has become part of the city’s contemporary cultural life. The city’s contemporary arts scene is strongest in former commercial and industrial quarters.
