OVERVIEW
Bansko stands at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in south-western Bulgaria. Its older quarter contains fortified stone houses, churches and cobbled lanes, while a modern resort zone has grown around the gondola serving the ski slopes. The surrounding national park protects high peaks, glacial lakes and extensive hiking routes.
Winter activity concentrates around skiing and the newer hotel district, which can become crowded at peak times. In warmer months, walkers use the town as a base for mountain routes and nearby villages. Traditional taverns, local music and the preserved old quarter give the destination more character than a purpose-built ski resort, despite rapid development.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at The Old Town
Use The Old Town to understand a specific part of Bansko’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Hike around Pirin Mountains
Choose a walk around Pirin Mountains that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Choose terrain at Planinski that matches your ability. Operating dates, lift access and snow quality depend on the season and conditions, so check the current report before travelling.
