OVERVIEW
Pisa is a historic city in Tuscany, built beside the Arno River and known internationally for a monumental religious complex outside the main centre. Medieval streets, university buildings and residential districts extend well beyond the famous square. The river divided mercantile and residential quarters, leaving palaces, churches and arcaded streets across both banks of the historic city.
The tower and cathedral attract heavy crowds, but riverside walks, churches and local neighbourhoods reveal a broader city. Staying beyond a brief stop allows the relationship between academic life, architecture and everyday streets to become clearer. University life keeps the centre active beyond sightseeing hours, especially around markets, cafés and streets away from the monumental complex.

THINGS TO DO
Explore Museum of Computing Instruments
Focus on Museum of Computing Instruments for a collection that adds real context to Pisa. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Look closely at Duomo di Pisa for a concrete introduction to Pisa’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Camposanto Monumentale
Use Camposanto Monumentale to understand a specific part of Pisa’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
