OVERVIEW
Florence grew along the Arno River and became a leading centre of Renaissance art, architecture and banking. Churches, palaces and civic squares contain works by many of Europe’s most influential artists, while dense residential streets surround the monumental core. Hills and gardens rise immediately beyond the centre.
The major Renaissance art museums and cathedral complex require advance planning because queues and timed tickets dominate busy periods. Crossing the river into the artisan quarter reveals workshops, quieter streets and major churches beyond the most crowded core. A hillside square and nearby basilica provide the clearest overview of the dome, river and surrounding hills.
