OVERVIEW
Cinque Terre consists of five small villages pressed between steep hills and the Ligurian coast. Colourful houses cluster around harbours or narrow valleys, while stone terraces climb slopes once devoted extensively to vines and olives. Trains, boats and walking paths connect the settlements because road access is limited.
The coastal trail is famous but not always fully open, and some sections involve steep steps with little shade. Trains make village-hopping easy, though platforms and central lanes become extremely crowded in peak periods. Staying overnight or walking inland routes reveals quieter agricultural terraces and a more lived-in side beyond the main viewpoints.
