OVERVIEW
Palmyra is an ancient archaeological town in central Syria, where temples, tombs and monumental streets once formed a major caravan centre. Conflict and deliberate destruction have severely damaged parts of the site. Surrounding countryside sits alongside central streets, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. The transition between port and central streets is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Current security conditions make ordinary leisure travel inappropriate. The surviving ruins remain globally important, but any future visit would require authoritative guidance and careful attention to ongoing conservation. Time spent around temples also brings central streets into view, adding a different layer to the visit. Time spent around temples also brings port into view, adding a different layer to the visit.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Funerary Towers for a concrete introduction to Palmyra’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Explore Temple of Bel to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Palmyra. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace local history at Palmyra Castle
Use Palmyra Castle to understand a specific part of Palmyra’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
