OVERVIEW
Damascus has grown around an ancient walled core of narrow lanes, mosques, churches and merchant houses. The great Umayyad Mosque stands near long covered markets, while traditional homes are organised around shaded internal courtyards. Modern districts extend far beyond the old city across the surrounding plain.
The historic centre is best understood through its living neighbourhoods, crafts and religious diversity rather than isolated monuments. Years of conflict have affected infrastructure, access and safety, and current official guidance is essential. The city’s cultural importance remains immense, but travel conditions cannot be treated as stable.
