OVERVIEW
Oudtshoorn is a small town in South Africa’s semi arid interior, surrounded by farms, low hills and dramatic mountain ranges. Ostrich farming shaped its wealth, leaving grand houses and agricultural estates across the valley. Coast and mountain terrain belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. Beyond the central area, farms and local food continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Cave visits, scenic drives and local food provide the main experiences. Summer heat can be intense, while mountain passes connect the town with greener coastal regions. Time spent around mountain terrain also brings farms into view, adding a different layer to the visit. A visit centred only on local food would overlook mountain terrain, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
