OVERVIEW
The Cape Winelands spread across fertile valleys and mountain slopes inland from Cape Town. Historic towns contain whitewashed buildings, oak-lined streets and architecture associated with early European settlement, while estates range from traditional farms to contemporary tasting complexes. Vineyards share the landscape with orchards, pasture and dramatic rocky peaks.
Wine tasting is the main draw, but gardens, restaurants, art collections and walking routes make the region broader than a sequence of cellars. Individual valleys have distinct soils and styles, and the towns provide useful bases between estates. Driving is convenient, though organised transport is preferable when several tastings are planned.
