OVERVIEW
Cape Town spreads between Table Mountain and two oceans, with the central city facing a working harbour and residential areas extending around the peninsula. Historic civic buildings, colourful hillside streets and modern waterfront development reflect several periods of growth. Beaches, vineyards and protected mountain landscapes begin within the metropolitan area rather than beyond it.
The city’s beauty is inseparable from a difficult history of colonialism and apartheid, interpreted through museums, neighbourhoods and nearby Robben Island. Hiking, food, design and coastal drives provide very different ways to explore. Distances and social divisions remain significant, so thoughtful planning gives a more complete view than staying only around the waterfront.
