OVERVIEW
Osa Peninsula is a rugged region in southern Costa Rica, with dense rainforest, mangroves and long Pacific beaches. Small settlements and lodges remain scattered along difficult roads, while much of the interior is protected. Across the wider area, forest remains closely connected with rainforest, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone. Settlement follows the relationship between rainforest and forest, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Wildlife watching, hiking and boat travel require experienced guides and careful logistics. Heat, rain and remoteness are demanding, but the concentration of species and intact habitat is exceptional. Routes through rainforest lead naturally towards mangroves, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers. Mangroves is encountered differently from beaches, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
