OVERVIEW
Ordesa y Monte Perdido is a high mountain region in northern Spain, centred on deep glacial valleys beneath a vast limestone massif. Forest, alpine meadows and vertical cliffs create strong changes in habitat and scenery. Across the wider area, mountain terrain remains closely connected with forest, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone, with lower valleys providing an additional point of connection.
Walking ranges from easy valley routes to demanding high traverses. Weather and snow can limit access, while the most popular trailheads become crowded during peak periods. Cliffs is encountered differently from high slopes, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Mountain terrain provides the most immediate experience, while high slopes offers a quieter and more local perspective.
