OVERVIEW
Nyungwe is a protected rainforest in south western Rwanda, covering steep ridges, deep valleys and high elevation forest. Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and hundreds of bird species inhabit a landscape crossed by streams and long walking trails. The transition between wildlife habitats and river corridors is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Guided tracking and forest walks provide the clearest access, while a suspended canopy route offers broad views above the trees. Wildlife sightings require patience, and the terrain can be steep, wet and physically demanding. The strongest contrast comes between wildlife habitats and forest interior, which support different activities and daily rhythms.
