OVERVIEW
Lake Bunyonyi is a deep highland lake in south western Uganda, surrounded by steep cultivated slopes and numerous small islands. Guesthouses and communities occupy the shores and accessible islands. Islands occupies a different part of the destination from farms, giving the wider area a clear physical structure. Beyond the central area, farms and lake shore continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Canoeing, walking and village visits provide a gentle rhythm. The lake works best as a place to slow down rather than as a dense sightseeing destination. The surrounding farms and hills provide a strong sense of local highland life. Island interior is encountered differently from islands, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
