OVERVIEW
Nusa Penida is a large island south east of Bali, with limestone cliffs, dry hills and villages connected by narrow roads. Coastal viewpoints and marine sites are dispersed widely. Settlement follows the relationship between coast and island interior, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes, with island interior providing an additional point of connection.
Diving, snorkelling and scenic stops provide the main appeal, but roads and crowds can make travel slow. Staying overnight reveals quieter mornings and a more local side of the island. Villages draws most attention, but coastal settlements contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. Cliffs provides the most immediate experience, while coast offers a quieter and more local perspective.

THINGS TO DO
Spend time at Atuh Beach rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Snorkel around Nusa Penida’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Dive at Nusa Penida’s principal sites
Dive around Nusa Penida’s principal dive sites with an operator suited to your certification and experience. Visibility, currents and access change with conditions, and particular sightings are never guaranteed.
