OVERVIEW
Bali is a large Indonesian island with volcanic mountains at its centre, fertile rice-growing areas inland and a varied coastline of beaches and cliffs. Hindu temples, ceremonies and household shrines are visible throughout daily life, distinguishing the island culturally from most of Indonesia. Tourism is concentrated in the south, while central and northern areas retain more agriculture and smaller settlements.
Different parts of the island offer very different experiences, from busy beach districts and nightlife to craft villages, diving areas and mountain routes. Traffic can make short distances slow, so location matters more than the island’s size suggests. Despite heavy development, religious practice, irrigation traditions and village organisation remain central to the landscape rather than decorative additions for visitors.

THINGS TO DO
Book a spa or yoga session in Ubud
Choose a treatment or class that fits your interests rather than assuming every retreat offers the same experience. Ubud has the broadest concentration, but quality and advance-booking requirements vary.
Climb Mount Batur before sunrise
Join a responsible guided ascent suited to current volcanic, trail and weather conditions. The early start and steep ground require preparation, and access can change at short notice.
Spend an evening in Seminyak
Choose Seminyak when you want Bali’s concentrated restaurant, bar and late-night scene. Plan transport back to your accommodation in advance, particularly if you are based outside southern Bali.
Dive the Liberty wreck at Tulamben
Dive this well-known shore-access wreck with an operator suited to your certification. Visibility, currents and marine-life sightings vary, and Tulamben requires a dedicated journey from many Bali bases.
Explore the temple complex at Besakih
Visit Bali’s largest temple complex on the slopes of Mount Agung with respectful dress and behaviour. Travel time is substantial from southern resorts, so combine it with an eastern or central Bali route.
Taste Balinese dishes at a local market
Use a market near your base to try dishes and snacks prepared for local customers. Ask what unfamiliar foods contain and choose busy stalls rather than travelling across the island for one famous market.
Surf the breaks around Uluwatu
Choose a break suited to your ability and use local instruction if the reef, currents or access are unfamiliar. Uluwatu’s conditions vary by swell and season and are not suitable for every surfer.
Spend an afternoon at Jimbaran Bay
Choose a section of Jimbaran Bay for swimming, sand and a sunset meal. Conditions vary, so check the water locally and allow extra travel time if you are staying elsewhere on Bali.
Experience a Balinese temple ceremony respectfully
Attend only where visitors are welcomed, dress appropriately and follow local instructions. Ceremonies are living religious events rather than scheduled performances, and access can change without notice.
