OVERVIEW
Norfolk Island is a small volcanic island in the South Pacific, with steep coasts, farms and a compact settlement. Archaeological remains, convict buildings and descendants of Pitcairn settlers shape its complex cultural identity. Farms and shoreline belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. Away from the principal landmarks, shoreline gives way gradually to coast across the wider area.
Walking, heritage sites and coastal views provide the main experiences. Limited flights and a small population create a strong sense of isolation. Farms is encountered differently from coastal settlements, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Farms is encountered differently from island interior, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
