OVERVIEW
The Bay of Islands is a broad inlet in northern New Zealand containing more than a hundred islands, quiet coves and small coastal settlements. The area has deep significance in Māori and colonial history, including the site where the country’s founding treaty was first signed. Two neighbouring towns provide the main services, marinas and departure points for boat trips.
Sailing, kayaking and wildlife trips make the most of the sheltered water, while historic sites explain the bay’s central role in early Māori and European contact. The main towns become busy in summer, but smaller coves and islands offer a quieter experience. A car and boat excursion together provide the broadest view of the region.
