OVERVIEW
Auckland occupies a narrow stretch of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea, with neighbourhoods spreading around two large harbours. Dormant volcanic cones rise throughout the urban area, offering views over water, suburbs and nearby islands. The centre contains the main commercial and cultural institutions, but much of daily life takes place in distinct suburban districts with strong Pacific and Asian influences.
Ferries connect the city with beaches, islands and coastal settlements, making the water part of ordinary movement rather than a distant backdrop. Food markets, museums and neighbourhood restaurants reflect one of the country’s most diverse populations. The urban area is extensive and traffic can be slow, so choosing a base near the places of greatest interest makes a noticeable difference.
