OVERVIEW
Mývatn is a lake region in northern Iceland, surrounded by lava fields, pseudocraters and geothermal landscapes. Wetlands support abundant birds, while small settlements and farms occupy the gentler shore. Across the wider area, wetlands remains closely connected with lake shore, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone. The wider setting extends from wetlands towards farms, with roads and communities linking the two.
Driving and short walks connect the main features, although insects can be intense in summer. Nearby geothermal baths and volcanic routes provide further variety. The strongest contrast comes between birdlife and port, which support different activities and daily rhythms. A visit centred only on port would overlook birdlife, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
