Akureyri

Akureyri is the largest town in northern Iceland, set at the head of a long fjord beneath rounded mountains. Its compact centre contains colourful houses, cafés, cultural venues and an unexpectedly rich botanical garden, while the harbour remains active with fishing and cruise traffic. The town provides the main urban base for exploring waterfalls, geothermal areas, whale-watching ports and winter landscapes across the north.

Local restaurants, swimming pools, shops and a strong arts scene give the town more everyday life than a brief sightseeing stop might suggest. The fjord and mountains remain visible from much of the centre, even when weather limits excursions. Winter supports skiing and northern-lights trips, while summer brings long daylight and easier access to surrounding valleys.
