OVERVIEW
Mount Wutai is a high mountain region in northern China, centred on a broad valley surrounded by five major peaks. Numerous monasteries reflect its long importance within Chinese Buddhism and continue to support active religious communities. Across the wider area, mountain terrain remains closely connected with high peaks, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Temple visits, walking and quiet village streets provide the main experiences. The altitude brings cooler weather, while seasonal pilgrimages can make the central valley exceptionally busy. Temples is encountered differently from villages, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Time spent around mountain terrain also brings villages into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
