OVERVIEW

Datong lies on a high plateau in northern China and grew as an imperial frontier centre. The nearby Yungang Grottoes contain thousands of Buddhist sculptures carved into sandstone cliffs, while reconstructed walls and temples shape the modern old-town area. Coal mining and industry remain important beyond the heritage zone.

The grottoes are the strongest attraction and reward careful attention to differences in scale and style. Temples and historic sites outside the centre add context, though some urban heritage has been heavily rebuilt. The city offers a useful contrast between monumental religious art and modern industrial development.
