OVERVIEW
Beijing occupies a broad plain in northern China, with an historic core organised around the former imperial palace and a strong north-south axis. Temple complexes, city gates and courtyard neighbourhoods survive among ring roads, apartment districts and modern towers. The city’s scale is immense, and many major sites are separated by substantial distances.
Traditional alleyways provide a more intimate contrast to the monumental centre, with homes, cafés and small businesses filling narrow lanes. Contemporary art, food and technology scenes are distributed across newer districts. Air quality, heat and crowds can affect the experience, but the depth of architecture and history makes careful planning especially rewarding.
