OVERVIEW
Mount Everest is the highest peak on Earth, rising within a vast mountain region of glaciers, monasteries and Sherpa settlements. Trekking routes approach from Nepal and Tibet through very different landscapes and administrative systems. The wider destination extends from glaciers towards lower valleys, with local communities occupying the ground between them. Away from the principal landmarks, lower valleys gives way gradually to glaciers across the wider area.
High altitude travel requires acclimatisation, experienced guides and careful preparation. The wider valleys and communities are as important to the experience as views of the summit. Exploring beyond lower valleys reveals port, a part of the destination that short visits often miss. Port draws most attention, but glaciers contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life.
