OVERVIEW
Mount Etna is an active volcanic region in eastern Sicily, with summit craters, lava fields and cultivated lower slopes. Towns, vineyards and forest occupy the broad base. Away from the principal landmarks, local routes gives way gradually to surrounding landscape across the wider area. Beyond the central area, surrounding landscape and local routes continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use, with surrounding landscape providing an additional point of connection.
Guided excursions provide the safest access to higher areas, while lower routes reveal recent eruptions and agricultural life. Conditions can change quickly, making current local information essential. Main settlements is encountered differently from local routes, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Forest provides the most immediate experience, while main settlements offers a quieter and more local perspective.
