OVERVIEW
Merzouga is a small desert town in south eastern Morocco, positioned beside a vast field of high sand dunes. Guesthouses, camps and local communities depend heavily on desert tourism. The destination is physically divided between port and fortifications, with roads and settlements linking the two. Central streets sits alongside desert terrain, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Sunrise, sunset and overnight stays provide the strongest experience, while longer routes reveal quieter dunes beyond the main access points. Heat, wind and seasonal conditions make careful timing important for both comfort and visibility. Local guides and quieter camps provide a more grounded view beyond the busiest dune routes. A visit centred only on central streets would overlook dunes, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.

Road Trips
Half or full day
Watch the night sky in Merzouga
Use Merzouga’s darkest viewing area for a night-sky session away from the strongest local light. Cloud, moonlight and seasonal access affect visibility, so check conditions before making a special journey.
