OVERVIEW
Casablanca is a large coastal metropolis whose centre expanded rapidly during the twentieth century. Art deco buildings, broad avenues and busy markets surround older quarters, while the port and business districts underline its role as the country’s economic centre. A vast mosque stands partly over the ocean and forms the city’s clearest landmark.
Architecture is the strongest reason to explore, particularly the mixture of European modernism and local decorative traditions. The old medina is compact and less monumental than those of imperial cities, while residential districts and seafront roads reveal a more contemporary urban culture. Traffic and scale can be demanding, but the city provides a valuable contrast with heritage-focused destinations.
