OVERVIEW
Marsa Alam is a small resort town on Egypt’s southern Red Sea coast, surrounded by desert, coral reefs and scattered hotel developments. The urban centre is modest, with most visitor facilities spread along long stretches of shoreline. The transition between coast and reefs is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Diving and snorkelling provide the main appeal, especially around offshore reefs and sheltered bays. Distances are substantial and nightlife limited, making the area better suited to water based stays than urban exploration. Conditions around coast can differ noticeably from reefs, so flexible timing improves the overall experience. The relationship between bay and reef becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
