OVERVIEW
Makgadikgadi Pans is a vast salt flat region in northern Botswana, formed from the remains of an ancient lake. Dry white expanses shift into grassland and shallow water after seasonal rains. Beyond the central area, port and grassland continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. Wildlife habitats and lake shore belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Wildlife movement changes dramatically through the year, while quad journeys and guided walks reveal the scale of the pans. Night skies and silence are as important as named attractions. Exploring beyond main settlements reveals lake shore, a part of the destination that short visits often miss. Time spent around grassland also brings port into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
