OVERVIEW
Los Glaciares is a vast protected glacial region in southern Patagonia, containing major ice fields, mountain ranges and large lakes. Two main gateway towns provide access to separate landscapes of glaciers and high peaks. The destination is physically divided between lake shore and high peaks, with roads and settlements linking the two. Mountain terrain occupies a different part of the destination from lakes, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Boat trips and walking routes reveal different parts of the region, while weather changes quickly and distances remain substantial. Choosing one gateway at a time creates a more coherent and less rushed experience. Lake shore draws most attention, but lakes contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. Glaciers provides the most immediate experience, while high peaks offers a quieter and more local perspective.
