OVERVIEW
Khartoum is Sudan’s capital region, historically centred where the Blue and White Nile meet and spread into a large urban conurbation. Government districts, markets and residential neighbourhoods once formed the country’s political and commercial centre, but ongoing conflict has caused catastrophic destruction and displacement. Rivers occupies a different part of the area from neighbourhoods, creating a clear change in landscape and land use.
Travel is not appropriate under current conditions, although the city’s geographic and historical importance remains considerable. The meeting of the two rivers once organised urban life, transport and public space across the wider capital region. The strongest contrast comes between neighbourhoods and markets, which support different activities and daily rhythms.
