OVERVIEW
Karima is a small town in northern Sudan, set beside the Nile near Jebel Barkal and a remarkable concentration of ancient Kushite monuments. Pyramids, temples and royal tombs are spread across the surrounding desert, often with very few visitors. Port sits alongside desert terrain, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape, with temples providing an additional point of connection.
Current conflict and security conditions make travel extremely uncertain, although the archaeological landscape remains one of the region’s most important. The closeness of pyramids, temples, desert and river creates an unusually clear view of Kushite power and sacred geography. Spending time around port also brings desert terrain into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Karima’s landmark architecture
Look closely at Karima’s landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Karima’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Gebel Barkal
Use Gebel Barkal to understand a specific part of Karima’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Explore Pyramids and tombs at El-Kurru
Explore Pyramids and tombs at El-Kurru to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Karima. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
